by Calfo Eakes & Ostrovsky

Calfo Eakes & Ostrovsky PLLC is pleased to announce that Kristin W. Silverman and Emily Dodds Powell have been elected members of the firm effective January 1, 2019.  Alicia J. Cullen has been promoted to firm counsel.  “We are thrilled to have Kristin, Emily, and Alicia move into these new positions with the firm.  They each have made major contributions to our firm’s and our clients’ successes,” said Patty Eakes, the firm’s Managing Partner.

Kristin, Emily, and Alicia’s practices focus on complex civil and commercial litigation, government enforcement actions, and internal investigations for governmental entities and private companies.

Kristin Silverman.  In the last two years, Kristin has defended the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (“WIAA”) in a series of lawsuits brought in the wake of a WIAA investigation into a nationally-ranked high school football program’s rules violations.  Kristin assisted in obtaining dismissals of three of those lawsuits and the fourth is set for trial this year.  In 2018, Kristin obtained a favorable arbitration award in representing a large, Seattle-based law firm in a dispute with its former partners over the terms of the firm’s partnership agreement.  Among her current matters, Kristin is representing Fortune 500 companies in government enforcement proceedings brought under the Consumer Protection Act by the Washington State Attorney General relating to the sale and marketing of their products.

Kristin graduated with high honors and as a member of the Order of the Coif from Chicago-Kent College of Law, where she served as an Executive Notes and Comments Editor of the law review.  Kristin graduated cum laude from Northwestern University with a degree in Journalism.  Prior to joining CE&O, Kristin practiced with Mayer Brown in Chicago.

Emily Dodds Powell.  Emily was part of the trial team defending Washington State Auditor Troy Kelley in a highly-publicized criminal prosecution of Mr. Kelley that ended in an acquittal and a hung jury on all remaining counts after the first trial in 2015.  In the past year, Emily represented a nonprofit charity camp in an arbitration against one of its former board members and landlord, obtaining a successful arbitration award for her client.   Among her other matters, Emily is currently representing an online travel agency in a putative class action alleging consumer protection violations.  She also represents clients in False Claims Act investigations and litigation, primarily relating to health care and government contracting.

Emily graduated from Harvard Law School, where she served as Notes Editor and Outreach Chair for the Harvard Law Review.  She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley.  After law school, Emily clerked for U.S. District Judge William E. Shubb in the Eastern District of California and also practiced at Paul Hastings in San Francisco.

Alicia J. Cullen.  Alicia’s practice has focused on assisting governmental entities and private companies to conduct investigations into a variety of internal matters, including theft, embezzlement, or other malfeasance, and into allegations of retaliation or improper employment practices.  She has handled such internal investigations for law enforcement entities, county governments, and large technology companies.  Alicia’s practice also includes the defense of False Claims Act cases and white collar criminal matters.

Prior to joining CE&O, Alicia clerked for the Honorable Roger J. Minor in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.  Alicia was a member of the litigation group at Covington & Burling LLP, and previously practiced at Sullivan & Cromwell LLP.  She graduated summa cum laude from New York Law School, where she served as a Notes Editor on the New York Law School Law Review. She earned her bachelor’s degree summa cum laude from the University of Richmond.
